If you are looking for ways to live in freedom, try feeding your freedom fire! Freedom rings, people sing! In actuality, it was July 2nd that Continental Congress approved the declaration and July 4th was the day the press release was approved.

Also, the job of writing it fell to Jefferson because Adams vetoed Franklin saying "He'll probably put a joke in somewhere" and noting himself "I am obnoxious, suspected, and unpopular." (Martin Snapp's "Document with a Past".)

My father, bless his spirit and silly sense of humor, was known to sporadically bellow out "Drop your drawers for Freedom!". Perhaps he and Franklin spent some time together.

In any event, what does freedom mean to you? By definition it is "the capacity to exercise choice; free will." Synonyms are independence, privilege, liberty, license.

Still somewhat in the wake of the horrific events of 9/11, we have hopefully come to appreciate moreso that we can celebrate how, when, where, and with whom we choose.

Millions of people live under restrictions we can not even imagine. The song lyrics "Don't know what you've got until it's gone" plays in my head. What would it be like to lose your freedom to chose your profession, lifestyle, associations, activities, religion, mates, where you shop, live, eat, travel?

Are you taking advantage of all that you have access to? It is so easy to whine and complain about what we don't have but stop and appreciate all that you do. If you are left wanting, circle back to our definition and exercise your choice, use your free will. Your choices today design your tomorrows.

We can surmise that with all of our freedoms, the obstacles and restrictions we face are often self-imposed. With choice comes responsibility. If you don't like something, work to change it. No on else is going to do it for you.

In the words of Charles Kettering "We should all be concerned about the future because we will have to spend the rest of our lives there." William James steps it up a notch and adds "The greatest use of life is to spend it for something that will outlast it."

Your choices may not only protect your freedoms but those of generations to follow. What an incredible gift to give back. So celebrate your freedom and the choices you have made, drop the grudges and gripes - and your drawers if you feel so inclined! Let freedom ring.

People Matters: Count your blessings and spend them on others. Here are a few fun ways to make someone else's day.

1. Buy coffee for the person in line behind you
2. Pay someone's toll
3. Give away some clothes, shoes, coats
4. Make cookies and drop them off for your mechanic, grocer, baker, banker
5. Buy a checkout person a beverage or a treat and say "Thank You."

People may twist their face in curiosity and apprehension but they may enjoy it. If they ask why, simply say "spreading some joy, no reason, it's time, having a little fun, just because, why not?" It's the little things and we're all in this together.
